  1. huh? I'm confused about this? It doesn't make sense.... I've seen numerous off duty officers make traffic stops, infact I've been pulled over twice by two different off duty officers.

Here's the rest of the story.

A Fort Wayne police officer shot a man dead Sunday afternoon after, police said, the motorist took “evasive action” toward officers on the city’s southeast side.

The “evasive action,” however, may not have included any weapons.

Police Chief Rusty York said an off-duty officer tried to pull the driver over after he saw him run a stop sign.

When the man fled in his car, the officer called for assistance, and on-duty officers pursued the fleeing vehicle to Warsaw Avenue and Oxford Street, where the car crashed into a sign in front of a church, York said.

When officers tried take the car’s driver into custody, the man took some “evasive action,” and one of the officers fired at least one shot at the man, York said.

The man died at the scene, police said.

York said an investigation is ongoing, but he believed that the driver had not displayed a gun or other weapon other than the car he was in.

The man’s identity was not released Sunday night and will not be released until police have notified his next of kin.

Police continue to investigate the shooting, and a news conference is scheduled for this morning. If the Allen County Coroner’s Office declares the death a homicide, it would be the 26th homicide the county has had this year.

A death is declared a homicide when a person dies violently at another’s hands and does not necessarily have to be criminal in nature.

On Sunday, the coroner’s office announced that a man who was found dead in a parked car on Saturday morning was the county’s 25th homicide.

All but one of the homicides have occurred within the Fort Wayne city limits.
