The City of Fort Wayne Housing Authority Housing Choice Program was audited by Housing and Urban Development. The outcome of audit revealed that the FWHA staff and board members couldn't add, subtract or do algorithm. The results of the finding determined that the FWHA housing assistance payments were inadequate, its zero-income household had unreported income, failed to govern its family self-sufficiency program as established by the federal guideline and failed to provide housing for over 500 families in need.
So what did the FWHA do when told informed of their duty to do better with administration the program. FWHA blamed their shortcoming on a flood that supposedly hindered their efforts to do right by people requesting affordable housing. FWHA and board members even had the nerves to request that the penalty of repayment by the agency and the demand that the FWHA step up their game was too harsh because of the historical circumstances that were beyond their control!!! In essence FWHA called the audit a straight out misinformed lie.
Hogwash the OIG bellowed back.
Matter of fact, FWHA could count their blessing that HUD did not totally suspending all funds and shut the door of the FWHA. And the final message from the OIG to the FWHA was to get busy correcting the problems and reimbursing the money or......
It's about time. HUD has long overlooked the bad behavior by FWHA, and millions of dollars have gone to developers rather than supporting needing families seeking safe and affordable housing.
Here's an agency, FWHA that did not want to be confused with another program, the Fort Wayne Housing Partnership that was find to have ripped out folks seeking affordable housing. The name were similar for one reason only, FWHA or FWHP, its purpose was to lie to families seeking housing assistance.
And if the HUD is serious it will looking into the displacement of families and the funding of the Allen County Childhood Lead Poisoning Program. If HUD is truly about the right thing and not about making Maynard Scales appear as the only incompetent executive director in the City of Fort Wayne.
