It was interesting to read about the Fort Wayne Urban League discussing the need for mentors. Jonathan Ray is offering the Urban League its assistance to ERin's House to host mentors at the Urban League. Ray, suggest that there is no need to reinvent the wheel.
Is this not what the Urban League is doing itself? Wouldn't it be more fitting for the Urban League to create or find jobs for the youth in the City of Fort Wayne? The late A. Leon Judge Higginbotham suggest poverty is the biggest crime supported by racism which impacts a quality education. Higginbotham wrote In a matter oF ColOr and Shades of Freedom about policies that impact the conditions of African-Americans. In other words, if your organization has not eradicated the policies of discrimination, your programs do nothing to improve the life chances of African-Americans. In a much simplier wording, it is the company you keep.
It is much easier to march in the street for board members satisfaction than to require these same board members to employ at risk youth. Education and jobs will keep the youth busy, is what the Urban League used to be in the business of.
