Pick me Extreme Makeover Home Edition

I am a private person, however, with President Obama, change is in the air. So, I am asking for help. Yes, me. I may not be the most worthy of being selected for the show makeover, but I am throwing my hat in the ring. If you know someone that's worthy nominate them, the deadline is April 2, 2009 for Fort Wayne, Indiana. More information at the end of this post.

Here's what my youngest had to say:

My mother would be the idea candidate for "Extreme Makeover"; her name is Jacqueline Dowdell. My mother's journey started out in 1980 when she took on her late sister's two small children.

My mother babysat and tutored children in our neighborhood and volunteered at the local recreation center. She opened a candy store in her home for the kids in the area and later opened beauty supply store that caught fire the day before the grand opening to keep the money in the community by offering cheaper prices. She moved her beauty supply down the street but because of high leasing prices and not enough business she had to close the doors.

But the lack of resources did not stop the lesson to the youth in the neighborhood about enterpreneurship. My mother is a strong advocate for children.

My mother started a non profit organization called Single Mothers Against Crime and Killers of Our Children. My mother volunteered with Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). She ran for City Council twice to raise awareness about issues impacting our community and to prove that whoever you are your voice could be heard.

My mother patrolled our neighborhood on foot to keep criminals out and make the neighborhood safe for her children as well as others. She protested against the Klu Klux Klan. She entered a caged pen with the KKK supporters when they came to Fort Wayne and was told by police authority that they would not enter the pen unless she was knocked unconscious. She stood in 20 below temperature and took the verbal abuse and after several years of them coming to demonstrate they hadn't returned to our community.

My mother worked for the United States Postal Service for 11 years and
decided to quit her job to go to school full time. My mother went to a
local college (IPFW) then to Law School in a nearby city. While out of town the house was vandalized and now is not in the best condition. My mother wants to continue to serve the community but has temporaily relocated to Maryland and is currently staying with me. I do not want her to return with to the house in unfavorable conditions. My mother continues to blog about Fort Wayne and
attempts to stay connect recently she had to give up her seat on the NAACP public relation committee.

My mother is a great woman and as a single mother raised two daughters, 28 and 38 and took on two other children and continued to grow to show not only us but the community to dream big and you can reach and achieve your goals.

My mother has slowed down. She has served as a substitue teacher and continue to volunteer as a tax preparer with low income clients.

Growing up I never had to worry about moving from one house to the next our home has always been there and everyone that drives down the busiest street traveling south to north remembers our house. For 24 years we had the signs in our yard representing all elections, protesting against drunk drivers and anything else that affect our community.

Please allow my mother to continue to help others, it has always been her vision to help out the community and encourage youth.
