Sure we know about 9/11 and Bin Laden, but Global Terrorism is worldwide violence against government. We saw leaders being booted from power with protest traveling from Eygpt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen and currently in Syria. These uprising by young people to remove totalitarian regimes can not bode well with the United States interests that lay in these borders. If the United States cannot be moved to save millions of Africans lives we know it will move to save it corporate interesst.
But, the United States can't just show up bombing Africans who are sabotaging and destroying these interests, now can they?
.
The United States must establish a presence in an Africa that it had little to no interest in its development. An Africa that is growing pockets of Arab Springs almost daily. Group forming to resist government corruptions.
The United States is too far away to maintain an eye on its interest..too far away to sustain peace in Africa..it was not a problem during the cold war but it is a problem during the GWOT that the United States is definitedly interested in.

Africa return to Africans..little Arab Springs
When I think of the United States and Africa, I think about Sierra Leone,Zimbabwe Rwanda, and Darfur, -genocide without intervention. Stand down and do nothing, let Africa and its billion of people die in poverty, appeared to be the message from America. Matter of fact, if Africa does nothing to save its own people why should we? So what has changed? The United States has created AFRICOM to focus on issues impacting Africa. This is a military combatant command that will be available to lead military operations in Africa, but has no military base in the heart of AFrica.
AFRICOM may be a little too late to the party? Africans have come together collectively under Africa Standby Forces to solve it's own issues. Perhaps, the ASF, is too small to subdue the myriad of issues, especially genocide and poverty within their countries, but can Africa continue to do nothing as if waiting on the United States to move forward on the issue?
But there is a global issue that is getting the United States to move forward and it is called Global War on Terrorism
