Here we are celebrating the greatness of the United States fighting for independence for its fellow man. We have learned that the document was not for all humankind. And each of our struggle is a reminder of that fact, whether it is because we are female, gay, disabled, or subordinated raced other. We are so weak kneed in confronting government because we so want to believe that the independence included all of us. Frederick Douglass reminds us, that is not true, .....
"What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham: your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your denunciations of tyrants, brass-fonted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are to him mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy-a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody, than are the people of these United States, at this very hour."
We as Americans are not fighting the war in Irag. It is each individual who have volunteered or has been sent to fight the war. Each of us, that is sitting here, are just observers, some cheering you on to death, others wondering how many more will die. Some will fly their flag the most patriotic act that they can muster but few would give up the comfort of their couch to join you in the killings.
