It seems SirGaffney , who was a photographer for Jet Magazine, and some of his friends, Simeon Booker and Moses Newson and others on May 15, 1961, were stuck in Birmingham at a Greyhound Station. The bus driver refused to provide accommodations for the group. The Supreme Court had outlawed the segregating of all interstate public accommodations.
This picture was taken of the group as Rev. Fred Shuttleworth discussed how to get the folks to safety. The picture was not published until March 4, 2006, forty-five years after the event. This photo was found with several dozens other were buried in the archives of the Birmingham News, a newspaper.
SirGaffney was misidentified in the first publication. I suggest you write a letter on MLK day to Oprah for Mr. Sirgaffney to have his 15 minutes of fame.
