Maryland State Workers are getting the axe

Maryland State Workers are the target in reducing the state budget. Governor Martin O'Malley has announced that state workers will be given long furloughs. Starting during Labor day weekend,Thanksgiving and Christmas, workers will be given extra days off.

Unfortunately for some state workers, pink slips will be given out, totally eliminating their jobs. Almost 70,000 state workers will be impacted in order to reduce the state budget deficit.

Over 200 state workers will lose their jobs, today 75 Department of Health and Mental Hygience Upper Shores workers will be notified that their jobs will be eliminated or laid off.

Uncertainty has the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees representatives on the ground attempting to alleviate the collateral damage. At best AFSCME can only offer a shoulder to vent for these workers as they leave their workplace for the last time. AFSCME does not support the cuts in the budgets but believe 2500 jobs were saved based on the cuts.
